“Alternative Vision” is the second art exhibition held by Haohaus in 2016, and the exhibition will take place in Taipei and Hsinchu at the same time. The exhibition invites four Taiwanese artists Tsai Wei-Ting, Zheng Chong-Xiao, Chen Fei-hao, Yen Tzu-Sung and the British artists Tom Rook, Helen Kirwan and Simon Pruciak to participate. The openings are going to take place together at the Taipei and Hsinchu galleries of Haohaus at 2pm respectively on the 26th and 27th of March.

In the age of technology, smartphones are the medium for everyone, from an eight years old child to an elder of eighty, to reach the world. Mobile phones and computers are necessary tools for modern people, which change our social behaviors and lifestyles; Do you remember when was the last time you sent a handwritten greeting card to your friend? When was the last time you read a book? Have you taken a good look at the buildings on the streets and alleys? Can you describe the look of the building you live?

This exhibition attempts to provide viewers a chance of self-reflection and contemplation through engaging themselves with the artworks. Do you see virtual or real environment on these still paintings? Do the works recall to you the street scenes on your way from home to work? On your way to our Taipei gallery in Chengzhong district, did you notice any of the buildings and the look of Taipei Old North Gate before 2016? Have you found a historic relic from the concrete jungle?

These seven artists invited by Haohaus are going to show how they observe, record and present our living environment in different ways; with their own polishing and modification, they bring new life to the tradition, and their works allow people to pay new attention to our surroundings as well as bring new feelings to the ordinary living.

Tsai Wei-Ting
Turn creative ideas into messages, and send them out by his art works
Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1984, Tsai graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University. Tsai is concerned with the various ways life is treated because it reflects the relation between the individual and the society. The individual, the bottom unit of social structure, is the core value for his creativity. From one’s living experiences, living status to social phenomena, can become what motivates his creation. However, how to narrate these events in his works and the messages perceivable, is the major direction for Tsai's creative project.

Zheng Chong-Xiao Paintings with a re-examination and reflection of modern civilization
His oil paintings often adopt the structure of traditional and renowned Chinese landscape paintings as the background, but reinterpret them by employing future technological products such as renewable energy, robots and flying machines, attempting to seek a balance between nature and technology in the transition of time and space. Zheng shows concerns with the relations of human, with machine and environment, so he uses recycled canvas to produce his works. His straightforward narrative style leads viewers to appreciate his landscape while thinking about the future symbiosis between the development of civilization and the environment.

Yen Tzu-Sung /Stringing series of images with black humor through unique observations
Born in 1979 in Taipei, Taiwan, Yen’s early works were carried out in the style of reportage photography using traditional black and white film. His images were shot under his unique observations, stringing series of images with black humor that leaves the audience space for further imagination. In recent years, other than reportage photography, Yen also focus on abstract and minimalism as a way to express his personal or a particular style of life experience.

Chen Fei-Hao / Using conceptual photography to articulate various issues
Born in 1985, Chen is currently studying at the Graduate Institute of Trans-disciplinary Arts of Taipei National University of the Arts. His specialty is to articulate the issues developed by history, social changes and technology evolvement with conceptual photography images. In recent years, Chen has been combining photography with various media such as installations, videos, and literature, exploring the possibilities made under the intersection of these assorted medias.

Tom Rook /

Tom Rook Recording memories and the world with maps and cityscapes.
His drawings mainly deal with cities, change, and the complexity of the urban and natural. His drawings focus on detail, and encompass both real and abstract places.
From a young age he has been recording memories and the world around him with maps and cityscapes. Illustrated maps capture a place in an absorbing way, and moving into new landscapes in Taiwan has intensified the creative process. They form both a journal, and a means of discovering a place.

Simon Pruciak & Helen Kirwan /

Simon Pruciak & Helen Kirwan Encounter the potential for interpretation and even transformation through his/her own experiences and perceptions.
This video, is inspired by Tennyson’s poem Crossing the Bar in which he contemplates his own transition from life to death in terms of putting out to sea. It seems to comprise one static image showing the elements earth, sea and sky in three layers; however, they begin to ‘move’ slowly across the screen, shifting as if in a process of transition.
An ambiguity between movement and stillness, the discontinuous and the continuous is suggested by the slight movement of almost static images. Time seems suspended as seascape follows seascape in one continuous progression. Whilst firmly of this world, they imply the infinite and the universal.
Ultimate reality is infinite, not subject to death or decay hence there need be ‘no sadness of farewell’.
The division of the frame into the thirds of earth, sea and sky, each section equally relevant and irrelevant, creates symmetry evoking the tranquility which Tennyson hopes for during his voyage.
The video encourages the viewer to linger and reflect on mortality, to encounter the potential for interpretation and even transformation.
