2012年我們推出了第一代碳纖維格林蘭式獨木舟槳 Kuroshio，這幾年在專業及業餘獨木舟圈中得到好評。隨著使用人口及划船頻率增加，我們發現在兩端的槳頭因為經常碰撞到岸邊的岩石而損壞裂開。槳頭裂開後槳不易修補而不能繼續使用，使用者多半整支丟棄。這與我們以碳纖材質來增加耐用及耐久性的初衷相牴觸。我們想到一個方式，槳身維持碳纖，但槳頭用更耐撞的材質，並已可替換的方式，就能讓槳的生命延長。經過了近兩年的使用者觀察及親身測試，我們推出了新的槳型，AKIAK，第一支可替換槳頭的碳纖格林蘭槳。

可替換式槳頭除了要耐碰撞，也要與槳身平順的接合，槳才能輕鬆入水及划水，減少亂流產生，增加划船效率。我們在槳的兩端放置了槳頭插座，讓槳頭能簡單穩固的安裝。槳頭的材料是Polyamide塑料，此塑料韌性強，耐敲擊碰撞，公差易掌握，讓我們能製作出耐撞，與槳身能無段差接合，價格又合理的槳頭。當槳頭磨損需時，使用者可自行購賣替換，繼續使用原本的槳身，達到低耗的目。

不同的划船方式及環境需求需要不同的槳頭搭配。現有的碳纖槳為一體成形，使用者如果需要三種不同形狀的槳頭就必須購買三支槳。我們提供不同形狀的槳頭，使用者能以單一槳身搭配多種槳頭，不必購買及存放多支划槳。除了形狀，我們也提供多種顏色的槳頭讓使用者搭配出心中最亮眼的槳。

In 2012, we introduced the Kuroshio Greenland paddle, and received praises among the professional and enthusiasts paddlers. As the paddle became more popular, we found out that the carbon fiber tips were damaged when colliding with hard and sharp rocks. The crack damage could not be repaired. This is against our intent of making a long lasting product. We thought of an idea, why not make the tips of paddle with a more durable material, and make them exchangeable. After two years of filed observation and experiments, AKIAK, is introduced, the first modern Greenland paddle with exchangeable tips.

Inspired by the Inuit traditional technique of strengthening paddle tips with bone, walrus ivory, and harder wood, AKIAK integrates durable polyamide tips with full carbon fiber paddle. The tip and paddle forms a continual and gapless contour for smooth paddling strokes. The exchangeable paddle tips provide extra paddle protection at rocky shores, and prolong lives of paddles to reduce unnecessary consumption. Gearlab also offers various shapes of paddle tips for different styles of paddling. This eliminates the need of purchasing multiple paddles. Other the shapes, there are also colours of tips paddlers could choose to customize and differentiate their paddles.
