「知識的水晶雲」－將知識帶入生活，就是建築事務所藍天組（Coop Himmelb(l)au）賦予法國里昂匯流博物館（ Musée des Confluences in Lyon）的使命。如同匯流博物館位於羅納河（RHONE）與索恩河（SAONE）所匯流半島上的獨特地理位置，其水晶雲狀的外觀成了當地一處「軟」空間、一個現代與未來知識的公共殿堂。

匯流博物館並非一處高高在上、專為高知識份子所設計的聖殿，而是一處公共的知識分享空間，一座連結科學與社會的橋樑，鼓勵人們踴躍使用。匯流博物館不再只是一座博物館，而是一處與城市休閒功能融合一體並積極開放的活動空間。在科技、生物及倫理主題的設計下，匯流博物館注重現代知識社會的需求，並將目前知識轉化為一般大眾可體驗的實作效果。

匯流博物館的造型就像知識般的具有變化性。不同的高度與斜度創造出其獨特的外觀，更巧妙地解決了內外界限的問題。動態連續的室內活動空間及展覽區，在兩層樓的空間中有著密閉黑盒子以及自由開放展覽區交替變化，這也是藍天組規劃出的實驗性空間設計，跳脫了傳統的設計方式並激發出大眾對此建築的好奇心。

匯流博物館的外部就像是由二大元素組成－水晶和雲－面對著城市方向的水晶體空間，其清晰顯而易見的外型，如同以寬廣的三層大階梯做為進入隧道的入口，提供了一處都會論壇場所；而雲狀的結構體，代表著是現代與未來的知識聚合處，一處蘊藏著無數知識轉變的彈性空間。

藍天組設計總監及負責人Wolf D. Prix表示，匯流博物館將帶動這舊工業區的發展，如同飄浮在雲上的建築讓城市直通海上或是半島的動線上毫無阻礙感，這就是博物館興建時的想法，創造出一處新都會空間，一處通往新區域的通道。

未來的社會將會是個知識型的社會，創新將在模糊的空間、混合及重疊的想法下產生，而關於未來的問題會在科技、生物及倫理領域轉換進行時發想，這三個領域正好也是匯流博物館欲表達的核心主題。在建築中，這些主題也籍由正常的變化、滲透、變形、一致性、解決及變化的過程來表達。

“The Crystal Cloud of Knowledge“ brings knowledge to life

The architectural concept behind Coop Himmelb(l)au’s design for the Musée des Confluences integrates its unique location on a peninsula directly at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône: A clearly structured crystal that serves as a public forum faces a cloud, a flexible “soft” space that holds the knowledge of the future.

The Musée des Confluences does not consider itself as an exclusive “temple of the Muses” for the educated elite, but as a public access to the knowledge of our time, as a bridge between science and society. It encourages direct and active use – not just as a museum, but as a venue in the city, as a new urban space. Designed to encompass the core themes of technology, biology and ethics, it focuses on the needs of the modern information society and makes current information tangible to a broad public audience.

The architecture is just as changeable as the knowledge it is entrusted with; it forms a landscape of various ramps and levels where the boundaries between the inside and outside dissolve, until the structure becomes a dynamic sequence of spatial events. The arrangement of the exhibition spaces also follows this movement. Joined by a boulevard, enclosed black boxes and free exhibition areas alternate on two levels – it is an experimental spatial design that deviates from conventional passageways and spurs public curiosity.

The outside structure is shaped by the two components of the “crystal” and the “cloud”. Facing the city, the crystal offers an urban forum and welcomes visitors with a monumental stairway. Its clear and legible forms, featuring a distinctive central funnel, represent the world that we move in every day. As the actual museum, the cloud holds present and future knowledge – a flexible space with hidden streams and countless transitions.

“The museum will drive the development of this former industrial district forward. The entire building floats in the air to allow unobstructed access from the city to the water or to the peninsula,” is how Wolf D. Prix, Design Principal and CEO of Coop Himmelb(l)au explains the concept behind the Musée des Confluences. “I would describe it as a passage concept that creates new urban space, a gateway to the new district.”

The society of the future will be a society of knowledge. But this knowledge can no longer be divided into separate specialized areas. Innovation is created in the spaces between, in the blurred areas, in hybrid and overlapping zones. The questions of the future are decided in the transitional areas between technology, biology and ethics – the core themes of the Musée des Confluences. In architecture, these themes are expressed by formal mutation, penetration, deformation, simultaneity, resolution and changeability.
